Intensive Care Medicine Jobs in Australia

Intensive Care Medicine (ICU) is a specialisation that is fairly new in terms of medical fields, combining as it does multi-disciplinary care with emerging techniques and technologies. It’s a discipline which has seen both a rapid increase in demand in recent years, and in popularity as a specialisation. This popularity is likely due to fact that many of the practical skills involved are easily transferable to other disciplines.

In Australia and New Zealand, the responsible authority for specialising in Intensive Care Medicine is the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). Established in 2008, the college has become the central body responsible for ICU training, replacing previous programs run by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

The CICM fellowship program is a 6 year minimum duration course covering all aspects of working as an Intensivist, though specific durations and requirements will depend on the qualifications and experience of individual applicants. Specialised ICU programs are relatively rare, and as such the CICM program is a popular choice for further career development. Doctors from overseas trained in Intensive Care may have recognition granted for their qualifications, allowing them to work at a consultant level.

With our experience and knowledge of medical recruitment in both Australia and New Zealand, we will work closely with you to find an Intensive Care role to best suit your professional experience, lifestyle and individual needs.
